Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a young girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal venue for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained her admiration.
